10 Facebook groups for writers

We have searched the depths of social media to bring you ten great Facebook groups for writers. These ten groups are ones that will likely help you grow as a writer. We’ve got quite a varied seletion so you will probably find at least one group that is right for you.

Some people might prefer to find a writing group for in-person meetings but if Facebook is more your speed, this post is for you.

Methodology

In compiling this list, I compiled a much longer short list. Any writing-related group I am part of or that comes highly recommended was added to the list.

After that, I went through them all and removed any that were inactive, consisted mostly of self-published authors begging for you to buy their book, or were in some other way not entirely top shelf stuff. There were still far more groups than I could fit in a reasonably sized post. I opted to include only the ones that stood out as being particularly good or slightly unusual.

There is no particular significance to the order of these groups other than the order I came to write about them.

PS: Most (but not all) of the pretty pictures illustrating this post are at best tangentially related.

10 Facebook groups for writers

Thanet Creative: Writers

I would be remiss if I did not kick this list of Facebook groups off without mentioning our own Facebook writer’s group. While the group is open to anyone, you will get the most out of it if you are somewhere close to (or somewhat connected to) Thanet.

Thanet Creative: Writers is where we announce our writing events and socials. We also share humour, writing tips, and relevant links. A number of writing-related projects have started in our group.

Authors and Writers Helping Each Other Grow

group

Authors and Writers Helping Each Other Grow is a writing group that I have lurked in for so long I cannot remember when I actually joined. The writing meme density is a bit higher here than other groups but it just part of the charm.

This group is for authors and writers. It is a place for us to support each other’s pages, books, websites etc. and to ask any questions you need to help you with your craft.

About: Authors and Writers Helping Each Other Grow

The admin team do a great job keeping spam to a minimum which leaves plenty of space for writers to share things that are helpful to the community. They maintain a series of other groups for book promotions which is probably how they keep the “please buy my book” posts virtually non-existent.

Fiction Writing

The same again

With just shy of 90,000 members this is a very active group. As you might expect from a large Facebook group they are proactive at removing spam which keeps them highly relevant for writers.

Fiction Writing’s primary is on helping members with the stages of writing and publishing. The group is for both first-time authors and seasoned authors alike.

Fiction Writing is only for original creations as they prohibit posts from Wattpad as well as all forms of fanfiction.

Grimdark Fiction Readers & Writers

end of the world

If your prefered genre is grimdark, this is the group for you. They are generally welcoming and lively. The group has quite a large number of 40K fans as well as Sci-Fi fans as you might expect.

Grimdark Fiction Readers & Writers is rules light but with a focus on respect and common sense. So leave drama and rudeness at the door before you enter.

Inner Circle Writers’ Group

If you are seeking a courteous and professional writing group that generally remains on topic, you would do well to give Inner Circle Writers’ Group a try. You will find in this group a great deal of encouragement as well as a greater than average number of professional writers.

Inner Circle Writers’ Group is a group for people looking to get published rather than one for those of us still figuring out if we are writers or not.

20 Books To 50K

This group, styled “20BooksTo50K®” is a group for self-publishing authors. The group aims to be a safe place to discuss how to (ethically) make more money as an author.

The group name comes from the estimated number of books selling one copy each per day in order to retire on a reasonable income. Thus, the aim is to help members get to the mythical 20 published books level.

To keep spam and repetition to a minimum they have a number of rules that you would be well advised to read before jumping in.

Writer’s Fight Club

Toxic Gas

Writer’s Fight Club is a Facebook group for only the thickest of thick-skinned writers. This is the place to go when you want an unvarnished, no-punches-pulled, brutally honest response.

We have only one rule, and that’s Rule Zero: No-one is ever banned, and no posts are taken down. (Except for ad bots or disruptive junk.)

Criticize and be criticized, attack and be attacked, speak up, surprise us and shock us without ever being afraid of being muted and overpowered by admins whose opinion differs from yours.

Writer’s Fight Club

The guiding idea behind the group is the belief that an aggressive environment is necessary for professional development. After all, you are going to get some brutal rejections before you get a single acceptance.

Beta Readers & Critiques

test reader

Beta Readers & Critiques is, as the name suggests, a group where you can go to find yourself a beta reader or two. This group outright bans all forms of promotion. They are very clear that the only purpose of the group is finding beta readers. Nothing else. At. All.

A beta-reader, for those few here who don’t yet know, is a reader who beta tests your work by reading it in a state that might or might not be publication-ready and gives you feedback. That feedback allows you to do any last minute edits to really polish it to perfection.

Writers of Non-fiction

questions

Not all writers are writers of fiction. For those fact-based writers – Writers of Non-fiction is the group for you. Most days are themed around a specific focus – there’s a list pinned to the top of the group.

It is recommended that you take a look in the “files” section of the group. The files list is where the rules and other documents are to be found. You will also find a master list of the (many) admins contact details including where to buy their books.

Where Authors Begin

start road

Where Authors Begin is a group by writers for writers. This is a group for writers of all levels from beginners to expert – published and unpublished. They maintain a (considerably large) document listing all the published works of their author members. They have quite a lot of files so you might have to scroll a bit to find it.

This group has the most “rules” in that there is an FAQ document which explains what the rules are and why there are there. It also contains helpful lists of commonly used terms and the people responsible for different things.

Which groups would you add?

With so many great writing groups, it was a hard task reducing the list to just ten. I had to skip a lot of very worthwhile Facebook groups that deserve to be listed every bit as much as the ones I included.

Are you a member of any writing groups on Facebook. If so which Facebook groupss have been the most helpful for you?
